To: All SRS Employees
I write this letter as the President of the M&O contractor organization at SRS, although it reflects the position of SRNS, WSRC and WSI, and includes concurrence from my counterparts from those organizations. In 1995, the Secretary of Energy authorized the formation of the Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual Employees (GLOBE) organization within both the Department and its contractor organizations. As contractors, we join DOE in that recognition, and allow the local SRS chapter to gather as a diversity group. Our definition of diversity extends beyond equal employment opportunity, affirmative action or racial and ethnic groups. We will strive to incorporate the concepts of diversity and teamwork consistently throughout all aspects of our work. With respect to GLOBE, we will provide the SRS chapter with the same privileges on the SRS that are available to other diversity organizations that may be recognized by the DOE. On a personal note, I have spent my professional life dedicated to protecting this country and the freedoms that it affords its citizens. A particular strength of the American people is the tolerance - indeed, the advocay - of divergent viewpoints, even when those views may be in conflict with our own. That is one aspect that makes us strong. Even when viewpoints may be in conflict with our own, we should remember that freedom from descrimination - of any kind - is a principle that is important to us all.
